These screenshots and renderings are of the 3D model recently completed of the 14th Century Venetian fortress that still remains generally intact on the southern coast of the Island of Crete. This castle/fortress was built in 1371 BC by the conquering Venetian army to protect against pirates and enemies, as well as a base for attacks inland against Cretan resistance. Although the Venetians named it the Castle of St. Nickitas, the locals dubbed it Frangokastello, meaning castle of the Franks (Venetians). This model was uploaded to Google Warehouse on 9/15/2012, and should be live on Google earth within two weeks.
